Let's Look At: Karun Chandhok

Sorry this is late. I've been busy with work. Anyway, this week I am looking at my favourite new driver, Karun Chandhok.

Name: Karun Chandhok
Date of Birth: 19th January 1984
Place of Birth: Chennai (Madras), India
Sport: Formula 1 racing
Car number: 20
Team: Hispania Racing
Number of F1 races so far: 10
Best finish this season: 14 (Melbourne)
Worst finish this season: 24 (Bahrain)
Average finish this season: 18
Retirements this season: 4
Average qualifier this season: 23.4
Points this season (up to Hockenheim): 0
Points in whole career: 0
Best career finish: N/A
Wikipedia page: Here

The second Indian driver in F1 after Narain Karthikeyan in 2005, Karun Chandhok is having his first season in the sport after time in GP2 and other motor racing divisions. He also seems to be having a part-time career as a BBC comentator as his team switch around their drivers. Only Hispania have changed any of their drivers so far, giving Sakon Yamamoto his chance.
Although Chandhok always qualifies fairly far back on the grid, he does well in the races. In fact, out of the drivers in the new teams, he is the best finisher, being the eighteenth best in the Grand Prix. This puts all the other new team drivers, and De La Rosa in the Sauber, as worse finishers!
I'm not sure why I like Chandhok so much. Maybe part of it's that new drivers are getting closer in age to me. Maybe it's because my brother spent some time in India this year. He's also quite a fun guy to listen to on the TV, because of his crazy knowledge about facts from formula 1 history. He's finished six out of ten races this season, and I hope he continues in F1 and can get into a car that can drive well enough to be really competitive.

Let's Look At: Fernando Alonso

This week, I'm looking at my favourite F1 driver this season. He's had such a lot of bad luck, but at least Spain won for him in the football two weeks ago!

Name: Fernando Alonso Diaz
Date of Birth: 29th July 1981
Place of Birth: Oviedo, Asturias, Spain
Sport: Formula 1 racing
Car number: 8
Team: Ferrari
Number of F1 races so far: 150
Best finish this season: 1st (Bahrain)
Worst finish this season: 14 (Silverstone)
Average finish this season: 6.3
Average qualifier this season: 7.9
Points this season (up to Silverstone): 98
Points in whole career: 675
Best career finish: 1st (2005 – 133pts, 2006 - 134pts)

Fernando Alonso began his F1 career with Minardi, and came 23rd in his first season, in 2001. In 2002, he was a test driver for Renault, then became one of their best drivers, coming 6th in 2003, 4th in 2004, then winning the championship for them in 2005 and 2006! In 2007 – his one season with Hamilton (that didn't go down so well), he came third to the young driver. He returned to Renault for two more years, before going into Ferrari this year.
Unfortunately, Ferrari have been plagued with problems since Bahrain. Either Massa, Alonso or both have done badly, although a cunning move with the safety car in Monaco brought Alonso up from starting in the pits, to finishing sixth. He's always been determined, but frustrations with other drivers and car problems have held him back.
However, despite all that, Alonso is one of very few drivers this season to not retire – the others are Lewis Hamilton, teammate Filipe Massa, Nico Rosberg and one-race driver Yamamoto. This means that although the Ferraris have had some problems, they haven't been bad enough for retirements yet, making them the most reliable cars in Formula 1. In fact, Ferrari are still the third team in the championship this season, and Alonso is fifth.

Let's Look At: Rubens Barrichello

This is a new idea I've had for my blog. Hopefully I'll have a new person up every Friday morning with stats about them. First up, thanks to Top Gear, is impossible-to-spell Rubens Barrichello.

Name: Rubens Goncalves "Rubinho" Barrichello
Date of Birth: 23rd May 1972
Place of Birth: Sao Paulo, Brazil
Sport: Formula 1 racing
Car number: 9
Team: Williams
Number of F1 races so far: 294
Best finish this season: 4 (Valencia)
Worst finish this season: 18 (Monaco – retired)
Points this season (up to Silverstone): 29
Points in whole career: 636
Best career finish: 2nd (2002 - 77 pts, 2004 - 114 pts)
Top Gear lap time: 1:44.3

Rubens Barrichello is the oldest driver in F1, and has had more races than anyone else in the sport ever. If all goes to plan, he will race his 300th race in Japan on October 8th. His points tally of 636 is the fourth-greatest of any F1 driver, just behind Michael Schumacher (1405), Alain Prost (798.5) and Fernando Alonso (675).
His most recent achievement was on Wednesday 7th July 2010, when he raced the Top Gear test track in the old reasonably-priced-car, which is kept for Formula 1 drivers to compare times. Quite a few F1 drivers have taken this test: including Button (1:44.7), Hamilton (1:44.7) and Webber (1:47.1 Very Wet). The Stig – Top Gear's 'tame racing driver' – managed 1:44.4 – but somehow Barrichello managed to beat them all. So I suppose we have to conclude that he's the best racing driver in the world, at least until Michael Schumacher does a proper lap.
